Cosmetology - Apprentice Part 1

NEW REQUIREMENTS:

A 10th-grade reading test will be required before students can be approved to register for the class. You will receive a phone call and or an email from a cosmetic art Instructor to schedule the exam after filling out the registration form. You must bring your government-issued ID AND Social Security card OR tax ID to the reading test exam for verification.

Any student registering for a cosmetic arts class will be required to create an account with the state board, uploading a photocopy of their social security card and government-issued ID. Students will need to visit https://accesshub.nccosmeticarts.com/ to create their account and upload their documents.

Course Description:

This course is the first part of a two-part course to obtain an Apprentice Cosmetology License. Both part one and part two are 600-hour classes.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be prepared to take the course Cosmetology-Apprentice Part 2. Once students have completed Part 2 and obtained 1200 hours, students will be able to sit for the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts Licensing Exam. If the student scores 70 or higher on the exam, they will be issued an Apprentice Cosmetology License. The Apprentice Cosmetology License will require the student to complete an Apprenticeship in a salon under a licensed Cosmetologist for a minimum of 6 months.

This course will cover basic salon services such as haircutting, hair coloring, permanent waving, safety, product knowledge, manicuring, skin care, and many other related topics. Students will begin their work on manikins and advance to patrons. Students are required to make up any class time missed on scheduled make-up days.

A career in Cosmetology may offer salon ownership, beauty product creation, self-employment as a stylist, colorist, nail tech, esthetician, and much more.

Makeup days will be offered on Fridays/Saturdays and are required for any missed regular class instruction. Students are only allowed to miss 10% of the course, which must be made up on the makeup days. Any student who exceeds the allowed attendance will be withdrawn from the course. This is an apprentice license, which means that upon completing both 600-hour classes for a total of 1200 hours, students will be able to sit for the state exams. After successfully passing both state exams, you will need to work a 6-month minimum under a licensed professional to receive full licensure from the State Board.
